Short Breaks

Short breaks (respite) provide children and young people with disabilities an opportunity to spend time away from their parents, relaxing with friends and having fun. They additionally provide families with a 'break' from their caring responsibilities; to unwind, rest or spend time with other children. Examples of short breaks include holiday playschemes or home sitting.

Our Local Offer provides a guaranteed level of short breaks and support. For example for a school aged child the Local Offer can assist parents/carers to a find suitable holiday play scheme or childcare during the main school holidays. Short break services which are part of the local offer are listed in the table below. Children and young people are eligible for these services if they have a physical or mental impairment, which has a substantial and long-term effect on their ability to carry out day-to-day activities. Many of the services listed also have more specific requirements.

Specialist short breaks

Some families with children with disabilities are likely to require additional specialist short breaks and services. For these you will need an assessment, which will address your child's needs as well as your needs as a carer and those of your family. You are of course entitled to an assessment of your child and family's needs at any time. So if you feel the basic minimum level of support - our Local Offer - is not meeting your needs or those of your family then contact the Medway Customer First Team on 01634 333333 or email customer.first@medway.gov.uk
